Shrines
The State of Maharashtra has to its credit hoary pilgrimage centers as well as landmarks in the evolution of Indian Temple architecture. Two of the grand ancient rock cut temples of India dedicated to Shiva - The Elephanta Cave Temple and the Kailasanatha Temple at Ellora are in Maharashtra. Also in this state are three of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines, two of the Shakti Peethas, the eight Ashta Vinayak shrines and the revered Vitthala shrine at Pandharpur - glorified by the saints of Maharashtra. |
Ashtavinayak

| Ashtavinayak, literally means "eight Ganeshas" in Sanskrit. Ganesha is the Hindu deity of prosperity and learning. The term also refers to a pilgrimage to the eight temples in Maharashtra state of India that house eight distinct idols of Ganesh, in a pre-ascertained sequence.
The Ashtavinayak tour covers the eight ancient holy temples of Lord Ganesha which are situated around Pune. Each of these temples has its own individual mythology and history, as distinct from each other as the idols in each temple.

Bhimashankar Temple

| This temple is closely associated with the legend of Shiva slaying the demon Tripurasura associated with the invincible flying citadels Tripuras. Shiva is said to have taken abode in the Bhima form, upon the request of the Gods, on the crest of the Sahyadri hills, and the sweat that poured forth from his body after the battle is said to have formed the Bhimarathi river.

Grishneshwar

| Grishneshwar is also known as Ghushmeshwar. The Grishneswar temple was constructed by Ahilyabhai Holkar who also re-constructed the Kasi Viswanatha temple at Benares and the Vishnu Paada temple at Gaya.

Jyotiba

| Temple of Jyotiba lies 12 Kms north of Kolhapur. This God is the avtaar of Guard ( Bhairav). Jyotiba killed demon Ratnasur who troubled civilians. With this incident the name of the village was Wadi Ratnagiri. Instead of such a long name, the public accepted this place as the name of God ‘Jyotiba’ and this it became famous.

| This temple is surrounded by 35 temples. The temple constructed in “Hemadpanthi” Style has five “Kalash” . “Garaud Mandap” where many festivals are celebrated from ages, is attached to this temple.

Shirdi - Sai Baba

| The Sai Baba Mandir is built with stones and Baba's Samadhi is built with white marble stones. A railing is built in marble around the Samadhi and is full of ornamental decorations. In front of the Samadhi are two silver pillars full of decorative designs.

Tryambakeshwar

| Tryambakeshwar located near at a distance of about 30 km from Nashik in Maharashtra is revered as one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva. Tryambakeshwar is the source of the river Godavari. This is an ancient shrine, however the current structure is a result of the reconstruction efforts undertaken by the Peshwa Balaji Bajirao in mid 18th century.
